DIY Birdhouse Decor {DIY in 30}

2 Mins read

Another DIY in 30 project using our scrap wood pile! Last week, I shared many projects that you have made with our scrap wood pile and today is another one of those projects that took less than thirty minutes to complete. Like I have said over and over again, I am not a huge traditional wreath person, but I like to add something to our front door for each new season and holiday. Old, rustic birdhouses are so pretty and I thought it would be fun to recreate one for our front door this spring. This DIY Birdhouse Decor is easy. If you have scrap wood lying around, put it to use and make one for your front door for spring.

We used a couple of pieces of left over barn wood and some trim pieces for the birdhouse.

Once we got the first one done, Matt wanted to make another one and actually used a log from our back yard. More on that one later, but let’s get to the tutorial so you can see how easy these were to make.

How To Make DIY Birdhouse Decor:

First, I had to pick out the size of the birdhouse. I chose a piece of barn wood that I liked the size of and then showed him how high I wanted the peak of the birdhouse. He measured and cut it.

Then, he cut the trim to fit on the “roof”. He lined up the center of the birdhouse with the peak of the roof to measure how to cut the trim for the roof. This made it so the trim pieces met perfectly at the peak of the birdhouse.

He used a nail gun to attach the trim pieces to the birdhouse.

Once the top was put on, we added the perch. We used a left over dowel, a drill and some construction adhesive to attach it.

Since we had small pieces left over from the trim, we thought it would be nice to add a “bottom” to the birdhouse. Matt measured, cut and attached it with the nail gun.

I dry-brushed the birdhouse with white paint. Matt used a 2″ drill bit to make a hole above the perch.

I hung the first birdhouse we made on the sign inside our front door.

The second one Matt made was perfect for the front door.

To make the second one, Matt did the same thing, but wanted to use a small log we had in the back yard for the bottom and roof. He liked that the log looked like driftwood and thought it would look great on a birdhouse. He was right. I am so thankful that he loves this DIY thing as much as I do.

I didn’t paint the second birdhouse because it already had a faint white paint finish. The burlap bow is from the DIY Grain Stripe Farmhouse Valentine Wreath. When I hung the birdhouse, I thought it looked cute with the bow so I left it.

In under thirty minutes, we had the cutest birdhouse to welcome spring at our front door. The second birdhouse took even less time because Matt had already done one and knew exactly what to do. If you have scrap wood lying around, give this project a try.
