DIY Cubby Storage Makeover

4 Mins read

This DIY cubby storage makeover is such a fun way to get a pretty piece that is also functional.

We are in our annual full-on purge and organization mission around here. Okay, let’s be honest… I am in a full-on purge and organization mission around here We are still trying to make over two rooms (a tween room and a home office) and things are looking pretty desperate around here. Since we took the Christmas decorations down, I really haven’t been in my decorating groove. I tend to get lax in that department when we have bigger projects going on. We are moving furniture, getting rid of things that won’t work in the new spaces, and trying to redecorate at the same time.

Like I have said before, every space in our home has to work to its full potential. Not only does every square inch have to have a function, but everything we bring in has to be functional as well. Living in a smaller home is a double-edged sword for me. I love it for the one reason I mention in this post, but I don’t have room for all the pieces I want to rescue. Does that mean I will stop rescuing pieces to make over and share here on the blog? NEVER!

I can’t give up something that inspires me, makes my heart beat, and is something I have been doing since I can remember. That would be a travesty! HAHA. Projects will still be rescued even if we don’t have room for them in our home. That just makes our yard sales that much more fun. This DIY Cubby Storage Makeover was something I would not leave in the store. It had too much potential to be left behind. I knew we didn’t have the space for it in our home, but that didn’t matter. I would bring its potential out and find a new home for it.

When we were at our local Menards store picking out white paint for the office, we came across this display piece they were trying to get rid of. If you know me, I saw the cubby storage and immediately fell in love. It wasn’t pretty when we brought it home, but a little makeover was all it needed to make it an entirely new piece.

The first thing I did was paint the piece in “Driftwood” from Dixie Belle Paint Company. They sent me a few different colors to try out and this color was a perfect soft gray for this DIY Cubby Storage. I loved how well the paint covered too! This piece was bare wood when I started so I thought it would just soak up the paint and I would be painting for days. It only took two coats! Phew!

I painted the inside of the cubbies with left over white paint we had from the walls in the office.

To add more character to the DIY Cubby Organization, I put a stained top on it. We had left over wood in the garage that Matt cut and I stained “Dark Walnut” from Minwax StainThen, to cover up the raw edge, we stained some scrap trim the same color and added it around the edge with construction adhesive and a nail gun

I think the trim and the top piece really makes this piece stand out. It gives it more presence and finished it off nicely.

This DIY Cubby Organization was begging for some casters. Cubby Organization on wheels?! What could be better?

I could see this being used in a craft room and pulling it and pushing it around your work table as you need different supplies.

What would a DIY Cubby Storage be without label holders?

Nothing.

Nothing at all.

The label holders make the “organizational” part official.

The top and trim really took this piece from basic to basically awesome!!

I could have just painted the top the gray color, but then it wouldn’t have been as cool.

Well, that’s what I’m telling myself anyway.

When I was staging this piece, I grabbed craft supplies. Then, my old photo collection was staring at me so I put that up there too. I had to share these with you. A lot of these came from a free box at a yard sale!!! Can you believe that?

When I shared my farmhouse inspiration exploration, I wondered what stories that tiny farmhouse could tell. When I see old photos like these, I always wonder the same thing. They are treasures.

This DIY Cubby Storage piece has come a long way from its old life at the Menards store.

One of my friends is going to buy it to use in her daycare center. Just think of all the good use it will get there.
