6 Drawer Dresser Makeover

3 Mins read

I have been shopping and decorating our home with yard sale treasures for years. It is amazing what you can find at yard sales and how you can make those things over to fit your style. Right now, farmhouse style is so popular and I am here to tell you that you can easily shop yard sales for farmhouse decor. Not kidding!! It may take a little creativity and some elbow grease, but it is doable and well worth it. This 6 Drawer Dresser Makeover was my latest project. It didn’t look like this when I bought it, but I knew I could make it fit the farmhouse style pretty easily.

When I shop yard sales for farmhouse decor, I not only look at what pieces are as I see them at the sale, but more importantly, I envision what they could be after I get them done. When it comes to furniture, there are things I look for before I will bring it home. I know a lot of people say, “I just can’t see the potential in these pieces”, but if you start trying a little harder, you will see it is not hard at all.

This particular dresser was not “farmhouse style” when I bought it. But, it was an old dresser that I imagined painted white and sitting in a bedroom of a farmhouse back in the day. The little drawers on the top sold this dresser for me. They are so charming and something you would find in a farmhouse piece. The color on this piece reminded me of the orange cabinets we had in our kitchen before we painted them and made over the entire kitchen. I knew a little white paint would make this dresser more “farmhouse”.

Along with changing the color, I had to remove the board on the back and get new hardware.

I have to take a minute to tell you that shopping at yard sales takes a little effort and vision and once you start doing it, you will get better at it. It is extremely important to think outside of the box and look past what a piece is when you see it. If the piece is something you can use, don’t let the color, finish or hardware deter you from making the purchase. If what you don’t like about a piece can easily be changed with paint, new hardware or a little elbow grease, then it is definitely a piece worth taking home.

There are a few supplies I always have on hand for making over pieces to fit the farmhouse style I love. Some pieces need more work, but this dresser only needed a few supplies to get it done.

I will tell you that I always have white paint on hand. White paint can make anything look fresh and new. “Picket Fence” from Fusion Mineral Paint has been the white paint I have been using lately. I really like it.

The other thing I can’t live without when I am doing farmhouse makeovers is MY SANDER! This is the one tool I use over and over and over again. It is amazing what a little sanding can do to a painted piece.

The lady that ended up with this 6 drawer dresser said that Fixer Upper was her favorite show and she is starting to decorate her home that way. She said when she saw this dresser, she thought it was something Joanna Gaines would do and it would fit perfect in the bedroom she is decorating. BOO-YA!!! My work here is done. Whenever I hear something about Fixer Upper/Joanna in the same sentence as one of my pieces or the way I decorate, I know my job has been done. 😉

I wish I could stand on a mountaintop and preach about shopping at yard sales to decorate you home. I hear over and over again that people are scared to try making over furniture. They are afraid that will mess it up. Stop those thoughts right now. You just have to try. Try it on a piece you already have but don’t love anymore. Paint it a different color and see what you think of it afterwards. You have nothing to lose! And, who knows……. you may end of loving it. You may even start a blog teaching other people how to do it.

Stranger things have happened……. 😉

If you don’t have a dresser to make over, I found some great options online:
