Antique Chest Of Drawers Makeover

3 Mins read

This Painted Antique Chest Of Drawers has come a long way from when I bought it. One of my favorite makeovers ever!

I love it when I find an antique chest of drawers that is a great candidate for a makeover. There is always controversy about painting furniture. I understand both sides of the controversy. There are times when I find a piece that I would never paint and then, there are times when I know right away, it is a piece I will paint.

This antique chest of drawers was on the latter side of that thought process.

This was an amazing find. At first, I thought it was just like the one we have in our living room (you can see that piece in the post HERE).

It is not an exact match, but very similar. This piece is a lot bigger. Back in the day, it was used with a washbowl on top. There would have been some kind of dowel going across the top for hanging washcloths on. The dowel was missing and we could have added one, but I didn’t want to. I liked the look of it the way I found it.

The door was in the piece when I found it, but it was split and not in great condition.

Things like that never push me away. If I love a piece and it has a flaw like that, I always come up with a way to get around it.

The top had seen better days, but most pieces I rescue are like that. Again, nothing to make me leave it at the store.

The back was reassurance that I for sure had an “antique” piece on my hands. 🙂

When I get new paint colors to try, it is like a kid getting a new box of crayons. I want to try all the colors right away. I always have pieces to paint, but sometimes, I want to find the perfect one to use certain colors on. When I received “Vintage Duck Egg” in my order from Dixie Belle Paint, I couldn’t wait to get it open and use it on this chest of drawers.

I painted the entire piece in Vintage Duck Egg from Dixie Belle Paint. This color is beautiful, but it was a little more blue than I wanted for this piece. I needed to darker the color a little bit. After I painted two coats of the paint and let it dry, I went over it all with Black Wax from Dixie Belle Paint.

You guys……. this wax is SO EASY to use!

It is a smoother wax than I am used to. It is like a softened butter consistency which makes it simple to spread on with a cloth. Most waxes I have used are a lot tougher and you really have to work it into a piece with a brush. It is a workout for your arms with other waxes I have used.

Not this wax. It gave this antique chest of drawers exactly what it needed over the paint. The blue is deeper and the look is what I hoped for.

I did not like the hardware that was on the piece when I got it. I probably could have spray painted them a dark color and they would have been fine, but I knew the 3 IN. Oxford Antique Windover Cabinet Pull from Hickory Hardware would look even better.

I was right!

When I set this up for pictures, I was loving the way it looked in our living room. UH-OH!

That is always a problem with what I do. I bring these pieces home because I see so much potential in them and then after I work on them, I fall in love with them. Thank goodness we live in a smaller home because it might be a furniture store otherwise. HAHA!

I am really happy I decided to leave the door off because it is a great place for books, magazines, folded blankets, a basket full of whatever, etc.

I couldn’t be happier with this makeover. Another piece was rescued and brought back to life. We are getting ready for our spring yard sale so I need to start making some decisions about what is staying and what has to go.

Some decisions are harder than others.

What color would you have painted this piece? I love hearing your thoughts about each and every piece I rescue.
