Charcoal DIY Dresser Makeover

2 Mins read

Before the yard sale season started in our area, I was really itching to find some pieces to make over and get my hands dirty with. I get like that every year after being cooped up all winter. So, while eating lunch with Matt one day, we decided to drop in to the local Restore near his office. I love this store, but don’t get to visit it often because it is about 45 minutes away from our home. This dresser was there when we stopped and I have to bring it home and breathe new life into it. This Charcoal DIY Dresser Makeover is a great example of how you really can make discarded pieces look beautiful again.

From a distance, I was really surprised it wasn’t sold.

As I got closer, I saw why.

I started pondering it. Do I really want to dive into this project? This won’t be an easy makeover.

Then, we found out it was 75% off.

Still pondering.

Then, Matt gave me the push I needed and the dresser ended up in the van with me on the way back home.

Supplies Used On This DIY Dresser Makeover:

Elmer’s Wood Filler

Orbital Sander

HomeRight Heat Gun

The makeover started with filling the missing veneer on the side with Elmer’s Wood Filler. This stuff is so great for projects like this. If you like to make over furniture and get worried about a little chipped veneer, Elmer’s Wood Filler is your friend. It is easy to work with and does the job so well, every time.

Once the wood filler dried, I sanded it to get ready for paint.

The drawers were a different story. I stripped all the veneer off the two drawers that were really bad. I used a HomeRight heat gun and scraper for that portion of the project. Once I had all the veneer off, I sanded the drawers smooth. (You can also use the method I share in this post to remove veneer easily.)

Depending on the piece you are working with, removing the veneer can be a long and tedious process. But, once you are done, it is like a new, raw piece of furniture; perfect for painting or staining.

This is how the piece looked right before I painted it “Luxurious” from Velvet Finishes.

This is what it looks like now.

It looks like a brand new dresser!

I used brass colored Rustoleum spray paint on the hardware and the color combination couldn’t be more perfect.

It really does look luxurious and regal.

This was a good project to get started with. I am now in full-on makeover mode and have many projects in the works.
