This French Linen Dresser Makeover turned out so beautiful. It is one of my favorite makeovers.
Like I said in a previous post, I have had to get creative on how I find pieces to make over during this COVID pandemic. Usually, this time of year, I am scouring yard sales and thrift stores and having so much fun finding all the things. This year, it is not that easy. I have found a few pieces at random yard sales I come across, but it has been slim pickin’s for sure.
I scored this beautiful piece on an online estate sale!
Since estate sales can’t happen right now because of Covid, they have turned to online sales where it is more like an auction. You bid on the items you want and if you win the bid, you pay online and schedule a time to pick up your items. I think it is genius. There is no fighting crowds at an estate sale. I also think the prices are better this way.
This dresser came with the top portion as well.
It needed to be put back together, but the mirror was in all there and there are so many details on this part of the dresser.
The first thing we noticed that needed fixed was the broken piece of marble on the top of the dresser. It had a crack all the way through it. I was not a fan of the color of the marble, so I was happy to see it go.
Matt just used a pair of pliers to grab it and it slid right out.

Supplies Used In This Makeover:
“French Linen” – Dixie Belle Paint
Wood Board
Once we had the marble out, we cleaned the entire piece with vinegar and water and started finding a lot of drips from a horrible job of staining and top coat that someone put on. They did it in such thick layers that the products dripped in many places. UGH! Since the drips were raised, we had to use the orbital sander to get rid of them.
***TIP*** Don’t paint over drips because they will show up under the paint. You want your surface to be smooth before applying paint.
Once the sanding was done, I used a damp cloth to remove all the sanding dust. Then, it was time to pick a color and grab MY FAVORITE DIY TOOL! This paintbrush makes magic happen. Well, not really, but after years and years of working with horrible paintbrushes, it has been so amazing to have paintbrushes that are such good quality and that are made for people like me who do a lot of painting.
The Palm Pro is my favorite brush from Zibra Paint.
But, there are so many others I use all the time too. These brushes are now Matt’s favorite too. They are just so good. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a DIY tool that will make your job so much easier.
I decided to go with the color “French Linen” from Dixie Belle Paint. Dixie Belle Paint is made so you don’t have to do a lot of prep. It covers so well and their paint colors are gorgeous. This piece was so dark when we picked it up, but it had so many details to highlight. I knew the “French Linen” would showcase the highlights and make them stand out like they needed to be.
This dresser took two coats of paint and some touch up in a few areas.
Matt cut a board to the size of where the marble was. I stained it with “Dark Walnut” stain. Then, Matt put Liquid Nails on the dresser where the board was going to be and used a rubber mallet to tap it into place. Easy fix and I love the way the wood piece looks with this makeover.
The wood knobs were perfect to put back on the dresser.
I wanted the contrast of the wood and the paint and it compliments the wood board Matt put in, really well.
There were glass knobs in the keyholes of the small drawers, but I didn’t like that, so I didn’t put them back on. Those keyholes weren’t made for knobs.
The dresser was in pieces when I got it home, but when we got it all back together, it was so so beautiful!

This piece will be finding a new home soon. We don’t have room for it in our home, but I wish we did. It is one of a kind. The “French Linen” dresser makeover will go down as one of my favorites.
