Laminate Flooring In My Home Office

4 Mins read

We finally added laminate flooring in my home office!!! I am so excited to have this project done! This is one of those projects that we have had on the list, but took us some time to get it done. Now that it is done, we are wondering why we didn’t do it earlier. We have turned an extra bedroom on the lower level of our home into my office.

It was an extra bedroom before it was my office and had carpet on the floor. The carpet was fine until I started working there. The wheels from my office chair wore out the carpet under my desk and made it permanently black. There were also paint spills and other “creative” stains on the carpet that wouldn’t come out. Oh, the hot glue spot on the carpet was a hard spot you never wanted to walk on because it wasn’t too comfortable under the foot.

The carpet was a very light color and it showed anything and everything that wasn’t light. 🙂

We painted the walls when I moved my office into the room and added some shiplap to the wall behind my desk, but kept putting off the flooring. It wasn’t bad in the beginning, but the more I worked in this room and the more projects I did in here, the carpet kept getting worse and worse.

Not only had the carpet seen better days, but I love a project going on in the house because it makes me clean out that space and purge anything and everything we don’t use or love.

My office is a drop zone for the entire family, so it was time to give it a little makeover and clean it all out.

The carpet under my chair at my desk was the worst. I was happy to be putting laminate flooring in my home office and seeing the carpet go out the door.

The flooring arrived earlier than I thought it would and it just so happened to arrive when Matt had a couple of days off work! #greattiming

So, we were able to get this flooring done rather quickly. All four of us worked on moving everything out of the room and removing the carpet and tack strips in one afternoon. Many hands make light work. Once we had the room cleaned out, the carpet pulled and the tack strips up, it was time to clean the tile floor underneath.

When you are laying any kind of flooring, you want to make sure the surface underneath is clear of any debris. I will sweep up most of it with a broom, but then I go over everything with a wet/dry vacuum

Once all the debris is gone, you are ready to lay your floor. The Select Surfaces Spill Defense in “Toffee” that we laid in my office was the easiest laminate flooring we have ever installed. I didn’t know that when I was researching which flooring to get. I chose this flooring because of this:

“The Select Surfaces Spill Defense Collection is designed with a tighter seal than regular laminate and this collection can withstand liquid spills for up to 24 hours and can be wet mopped. Each Select Surfaces Spill Defense Collection floor has an AC4 traffic rating, making it suitable for heavy residential use. It’s backed by a lifetime residential warranty. Select Surfaces laminate flooring is extremely durable—it will not dent, stain or fade, even in high-traffic areas.”

I was sold after reading that and a few more things about the flooring. Head HERE to see all the great things about this flooring. Matt said we will definitely use it again in our other projects because he liked working with it so much and it was so easy to install.

Tools We Used To Lay This Laminate Flooring:

Miter Saw

Tape Measure

Pencil

Jig Saw

Square

Rubber Mallet

Wood Shims

Tapping Block

Knee Pads

Make sure to put your knee pads on because you will spend a lot of time on them during this project.

When Matt started the flooring, he used wood shims on the wall to help make the flooring more level against the wall. The walls in most houses we have worked on aren’t straight, so adding the shims helps fill in the areas where you need it so you start the flooring off straight.

I created a video to share some of the tips we use when laying laminate flooring:

Once you get the first couple of rows done, the flooring goes fairly fast.

Why we waited so long to get this project done, I will never know, but I am so so happy it is done. This room needed it pretty badly.

We experienced a derecho (inland hurricane) while we waited for the threshold to come in so it took a little longer than we like, but it is finally done.

We love this flooring so much that we want to carry it through to the room next to my office.

Putting things back in my office feels great. Some recent yard sale finds were added to the space.

I like the darker flooring with the lighter walls for sure. I have been cleaning out the office since we got the flooring done. There is nothing better than getting rid of things to make me feel inspired and ready to tackle all the things. Having “stuff” overwhelms me and slows me down.

I may want to add a rug for the middle of the room. I am also on the hunt for a new office chair. Until then, my office is pretty much done and ready for many workdays ahead.

Do you have a home office? What kind of flooring do you have in it?
