I am not a coffee drinker, but I do love tea. I never used to go to Starbucks because I thought it was for coffee people only. Then, my sister told me about their Chai Tea Lattes and I was hooked. After about a year, I wanted to figure out how I could save money and calories and still get my chai fix.

This latte would be so fun to serve during a get together too! You can see how easy I made it to set up a tea bar for any gathering you host!

This recipe gives you the closest thing to a coffee shop level chai tea latte without the cost or calories. I have tried making this Starbucks Chai Tea Latte recipe with all kinds of products and teas and finally found the winning combination.

What Is A Chai Tea Latte & What’s In It?

A chai tea latte is just like a regular latte you would get in a coffee shop but instead of using espresso and steamed milk, the espresso is substituted with spiced tea instead. The name “chai” is the Hindi word for “tea”. The traditional ingredients of the spiced tea blend is black tea mixed with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and black peppercorns. Chai tea becomes a latte when you add the steamed and frothed milk to it.

What Is Steamed & Frothed Milk?

The process of steaming and frothing milk involves heating milk while simultaneously injecting air into it. The goal of steaming milk is to create a creamy milk with a rich, smooth taste. When the steamed milk is done, the top will have a layer of foam on it.

What Kind Of Milk Can I Use To Make A Chai Tea Latte?

You can use any kind of milk you like in a chai tea latte. The higher the fat content in milk, the more froth you will get. I was trying to recreate the same drink I ordered at Starbucks for this recipe, so that is why I chose skim milk.

I would tell anyone trying this for the first time to use the milk they enjoy the most. You can always try it other ways, but start off with the milk you would normally drink. I use an electric milk frother to make the process easy. The one I use comes with different attachments you can use in the mixer. Depending on how you like your milk frothed will determine which attachment to use.
